Platinum Technology has announced Desktop DBA for Motif, the first Unix version of its client/server database administration and migration tool. Desktop DBA for Motif is designed to replace the need to memorize SQL syntax for RDBMS commands with point-and-click commands.

Human Resource Management

IBM has announced HR Access, a global system for strategic human resource management, payroll and benefits. It enables international companies to manage their workforces through a single worldwide information database that provides an integrated solution for human resources, run-once global payroll and benefits.

HR Access runs on the IBM RS/6000. Languages supported include English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Dutch.

Clarify has announced ClearSupport CommCenter, a customer request and trouble management solution for the telecommunications industry. ClearSupport CommCenter provides a view into both customer accounts and the communications network, serving as a single point of contact for customer inquiries, service requests and problem reporting.

ClearSupport CommCenter runs on HP-UX, IBM AIX, Sun Solaris and SGI Irix, as well as Microsoft Windows NT. Clients supported include Unix/Motif, Windows and Macintosh. The price is $80,000 per server license.

Java Object Request Broker

Iona Technologies has announced OrbixWeb 2.0, an object request broker enabled for Java. OrbixWeb allows Java-enabled browsers to support the Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP). It adds server development functionality for building back-end CORBA services in Java.

OrbixWeb 2.0 runs on Sun Solaris, OS/2, MacOS 7.5 and Microsoft Windows (3.1X, 95 and NT). The price is $2,500.

CORBA Application Development

Black & White Software has announced Orb/Enable, a CORBA 2.0-enabled application development product. Orb/Enable is an application development toolset that works with Iona's Orbix. It allows developers to visually browse, manipulate and manage CORBA information.

Orb/Enable is available for Solaris 2.x, HP-UX, IBM AIX, and SGI Irix. Pricing starts at $1,500 per user license.

Wyatt River Software has announced LicenseTrack 4.0, a tool for software license management across LANS, WANS and enterprise networks. LicenseTrack 4.0 enables IS managers and system administrators to evaluate software usage trends and status, assisting them in making decisions regarding the purchase of additional software licenses, maintenance and administration.

Operating System

Tenon Intersystems has announced Professional MachTen 2.3, its Unix system for Apple computers. Professional MachTen 2.3 is a BSD Unix with a Carnegie-Mellon Mach kernel for Macs running the Motorola 68000 line of processors. The new package includes the NCSA httpd daemon Web server with multidomain extensions and the Macintosh text editor, BBEdit, with HTML extensions for creating Web pages.

Professional MachTen is available for Unix and Macintosh. The price is $695.

Printer Management

Open Systems Management has announced COS/Print, a network-aware spooling and printing management package for Unix. COS/Print provides a consistent look-and-feel across platforms and offers facilities not available in the standard Unix print utilities.

COS/Print is available for IBM AIX, HP-UX, Digital Unix, Sun Solaris, Unixware, SGI Irix, DG-UX, NCR Unix and Unisys 6000. Pricing starts at $400.

High-Availability Suite

Qualix Group has announced QualixHA Solutions, a suite of software products that support UltraSparc-based systems, including Sun Microsystems' Ultra Enterprise Servers. QualixHA Solutions enables users to monitor, restart, fail-over and recover applications. It monitors the reliability and accessibility of data, as well as the uptime of applications, including databases, Web, Internet and intranet servers.

Unix Connectivity

FacetCorp has announced FacetWin, a software product that enables the integration of Windows 95 and NT clients with Unix-based servers. FacetWin includes features that allow Windows 95 and NT clients to access and use Unix-based network resources such as files, disks, applications and printers.

FacetWin is currently available for SCO Unix, IBM AIX, Intel SVR4 and Solaris 2. A single-user license is $195, with discounts for multiuser licenses.

Backup Software

Alida has ported its GT Backup software to the SGI Irix platform. GT Backup is a network-based backup, restore and tape management software designed to eliminate unexpected data loss.

ObjectSpace has introduced Web<ToolKit> and Java Generic Library (JGL). Web<ToolKit> is an ANSI/ISO-compatible C++ class library for producing interactive HTML Web pages. It supports HTML page creation through a set of C++ classes representing HTML elements, including text, links, graphics, tables, forms, frames and widgets. The JGL is a set of reusable containers and algorithms for Java.

Tatung Science & Technology has announced Compstation U170-ES, an UltraSparc 1-compatible workstation that incorporates a modular CPU design. Compstation U170-ES offers an UltraSPARC port architecture CPU module. It allows data transfer rates of up to 1.3gbps.

Options include 2-D or 3-D Creator graphics. Systems with 2-D graphics begin at $19,325; systems with 3-D graphics begin at $21,995.

Terminal Servers

Specialix has announced the Jetstream family of products for WAN, LAN, TCP/IP and remote access servers. The line includes the Jetstream 6000, an eight-port terminal server, and the Jetstream 7000 and 7500, expandable from eight to 16 ports. The Jetstream terminal servers provide access to Unix servers, supporting Rlogin and Telnet with multiple sessions per user.

Database Servers

FairCom has announced FairCom database servers and c-tree Plus File Handler for use as a Web back end. These new servers utilize heterogeneous network support.

FairCom's Web servers are available for over 20 Unix environments, OS/2, MacOS and Microsoft Windows NT. Web servers retail from $445 to $3,745, depending on the number of users.
