The advent of the Internet, intranets and widespread access to information have created dangers along with the opportunities, the panel members said, implying that success in IT management will depend on how well one can manage the resulting changes. Bozman The network computer (NC) is not the equivalent of a PC--at least not yet. Visions of server applications delivered over the Internet to small multimedia devices known as NCs have yet to be fulfilled. Although such devices are under construction at IBM, Sun Microsystems, Oracle and consumer-electronics firms, NCs have yet to hit users' desktops, or totebags or briefcases. Accordingly, talking about network computers can be a tricky business. The keynoters were Alok Mohan, president and CEO of SCO; Dick Watts, vice president and general manager of Hewlett-Packard's computer systems organization; Scott McNealy, president, CEO and chairman of Sun Microsystems; and Doug Michels, executive vice president and CTO of SCO and one of the founders of UniForum. Formerly owned and operated by the Object Management Group (OMG) of Cambridge, MA, Object World has come under the umbrella of a major IT show promoter. OMG sold it to Softbank Comdex, Inc. (SCI), of Needham, MA, which puts on the series of Comdex shows and is known for its aggressive pursuit of other shows. (SCI also manages the UniForum Conference and Trade Show.) The well-attended evening session, held at Amdahl Corp.'s headquarters building in Sunnyvale, CA, offered attendees an open, interactive forum where they were free to ask any business-related question they wanted of the speakers. The panelists were George Bosworth, independent Unix contractor and the moderator of the Unix SIG; Tony Bush, manager of the Unix contract group for OnLine Staffing, a San Francisco Bay Area staffing agency; and Ed Blackmond, founder of Detente Technologies, a computer engineering services company. During his 30 years in the IT industry, he has put his name on 17 patents and worked for giants like IBM and Hewlett-Packard, as well as a venture capital-funded startup. That varied experience, in addition to having worked in East Coast and West Coast computer development centers as both an engineer and a manager, gives Luiz an impressively broad background.
