Cutting-Edge Research to be Revealed at Premiere Open Systems Event
Needham, Mass., January 20, 1997 - Cutting-edge Internet and system integration research will be revealed to the industry in March when The Open Group Research Institute Symposium premieres at UniForum '97. UniForum '97 is the industry's most prestigious conference and exposition focused on the power and potential of Open Systems technologies. In addition to this research symposium, the Worldwide Association of Windows NT Users Groups (WANTUG) and InfoTEST will each run unique workshops exploring the latest developments in Windows NT and Extranet technology. UniForum '97, produced by SOFTBANK COMDEX in conjunction with the UniForum association, is scheduled for March 10-14, 1997, at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.
"Through collaborative and direct development, The Open Group Research Institute produces new advances to current infrastructure technology," said Paul Dale, vice president of The Open Group Research Institute. "At the RI Symposium, current active research will be presented to real developers and users. Researchers from the RI and many of its collaborators in industry and academia put their work in context; developers and users debate requirements and priorities. This symposium highlights the rapidly changing advances in the Web, Java, and the Internet infrastructure."
The Open Group Research Institute, the leading shared research facility for Open Systems technology, is a division of the Open Group. The research symposium is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11 and from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12. The symposium will provide first-hand exposure to recent software research findings and results in scalability, distribution/mobility, real-time, fault tolerance, security and high assurance. In addition, the Research Institute's own investigations, based on the Web, Java, Active X, and microkernel-based operating system technology, will be included in the agenda. Paul Dale, vice president of the Open Group Research Institute, will host over two dozen speakers during this event. Substantial time is set aside for attendees to meet with and ask detailed questions of the presenters. This marks the first time this annual research symposium has been held in conjunction with UniForum.
The second workshop, sponsored by WANTUG, will discuss the integration of UNIX and NT clients and servers to enable application, data and file sharing. The Windows NT Developers and ISV Workshop will explore two areas in detail: Porting UNIX Applications to Windows NT and ActiveX Technologies. This workshop, slated for 1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, will be hosted by Charles Kelly, executive director of WANTUG, and one of the nation's foremost experts on advanced systems integration.
From 9:00 a.m. - noon on Tuesday, March 11, InfoTEST will host The Extranet: Workshop on InfoTEST's Enhanced Product Realization Project. The Enhanced Product Realization Project (EPR) is an experimental collaborative computing system, developed by InfoTEST members, that will allow U.S. manufacturers to accelerate time-to-market for new products and make product modifications anywhere in the world in as little as five days. This workshop will examine the EPR, one of the largest Internet technology trials ever conducted, by exploring collaborative manufacturing and electronic commerce applications in a half-day workshop. Presenters will include the actual trial participants from companies such as Bay Networks, IBM, Texas Instruments, Sandio Notronse Labs and Caterpillar Tractor.
These workshops and the research symposium are unique events that enhance the two-day pre-conference program, March 10-11. Considered the industry's most important educational platform, the UniForum Conference Program will offer over 55 conference sessions, providing attendees with the latest trends, technical information and advanced technologies, including the Web, servers, open systems, network technologies and integration.
The event will also house several specialized technology and vendor pavilions, including the Linux Pavilion, Open Group Pavilion, Windows NT Business Solutions Pavilion and Cambridge Technology Partners' Electronic Commerce/Internet-Based Solutions Area. Platform integration will be demonstrated in a special technology area on the exhibit floor. In addition, AIM, an independent benchmarking company in Santa Clara, will present its Hot Iron Awards, recognizing those products exhibiting the fastest speed and best performance in the industry.
As a special benefit to all conference registrants, UniForum '97 will
offer a unique opportunity to sample two industry-leading conferences. A
Taste of SCO, sponsored by SCO, and A Taste of CMG, sponsored by the Computer
Measurement Group (CMG), will feature some of the most popular sessions
from SCO's and CMG's annual conferences.
